A lot of us cannot count the number of times we have been told we are the average of the people we spend the most time with. It is an old idea and we already understand how that works at least on a basic level. If everyone around you is constantly complaining, you will eventually start looking at your own life through a similar negative lens. But the way your circle affects you is much more subtle than just picking up someone else's habits or matching their energy. It begins slowly and if you stick around long enough, the people closest to you end up defining what you consider normal, acceptable, or even possible.
