Tradition can be useful but also dangerous
Certain methods have survived for a reason and they protect us from making old mistakes. That is why the phrase “we have always done it that way” sometimes sounds like some deep wisdom. Sometimes it actually is. We do tend to keep habits because they have worked in the past and we repeat patterns because they got us through a difficult period. At the same time, we also easily become so comfortable with things that have always worked that we mistake this repetition for intelligence. We take that as proof that our current setup is perfect, which can slowly turn a useful process into a rigid identity that stops us from growing.
